For this year’s Fliegerwerkstatt travel, we went to nearby Werneuchen in Brandenburg. Because this time the just finished wooden canoe was launched for the first time! Eleven young people and our Fliegerwerkstatt team took advantage of the secluded spot at Tiefensee for paddling, swimming and small excursions into the surrounding area.
How does an engine work? What parts does it have and how is it constructed? To take a look inside, we make a cutaway model from the original T 53 helicopter engine.
To do this, all assemblies and parts are disassembled, cut out at predetermined points and then reassembled. This is the plan of Günter Hujer, who himself once worked on precisely this type of engine during his professional training.
In small groups, the young people are currently busy disassembling and labeling the parts.
Our young people from the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium built mobile kitchen modules for our neighbour Hangar1. There were certain requirements for the dinner-thek, but there was still enough leeway in the design to allow the young people’s ideas to flow in.
With our electric mobile, express delivery was also possible.

Two projects came to a close at our spectacle in December: ‘Instruments of the Continents’ and ‘Mask Play’ – instruments met masks and the piece FRIENDS was created.
Since last spring, our young people set powerful activities in motion to build their ‘Instruments of the Continents’. They sawed, milled, glued, sanded and painted their sounding bodies to finally string them and hear how it sounds.

Then it finally started. 80 spectators could experience a unique performance and the great effort of our young people.
Almost all the instruments could be found in our play FRIENDS. Some instruments, e.g. the first tin can violins, were on display as exhibits on the event evening.
They played on exclusively self-made instruments, with specially designed masks and stories written for them: The pupils of the Hans-Böckler-Schule, the Friedenauer Gemeinschaftsschule, the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium, the OSZ Lotis, the OSZ Kim, the OSZ Büro1 and OSZ Körperpflege as well as other young people from the Fliegerwerkstatt Berlin.
The music for the instruments was written by the composer and musician Hansjörn Brandenburg and rehearsed with the young people. The instruments and masks were brought together by the staging of Donald Becker and Renata Messing.
Event professionals Gregor Beling and André Wlodarski provided the right lighting and perfect sound during rehearsals and the performance.

Our project ‘Practical testing for young refugees’ in cooperation with Arbeit und Bildung e.V. and IPLE is in its fourth year. 72 young people from six schools were each at the Fliegerwerkstatt for a week during their orientation phase. The time until the autumn holidays was used to strengthen the language and social skills of the individual groups, to support their professional orientation and, if possible, to find an internship from November onwards.
All participants were able to take part in the project ‘Instruments of the Continents’ in the Fliegerwerkstatt.

When Donald Becker joined the team, he brought with him a project from the event theater. According to his conception, the stage design for the play “Das Wirtshaus im Spessart” (The Inn in Spessart), which will be performed at the Brandenburg Theater Festival in the St. Paulikloster, will be created together with the young people of the Fliegerwerkstatt.
According to the designs, a 1:10 scale model was built, from which the young people can take all the measurements and easily translate them into the real sizes.
The eight-meter-high stage parts are sawed, screwed, covered with molton fabric and coated with fire-safe glaze.
The final stage parts were built directly on site.
Over Whitsun, the play will be shown at the St. Paulikloster in Brandenburg an der Havel.

Children and young people from all over the world come together at the Fliegerwerkstatt: We currently have participants from Germany, Guinea, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, Romania, Albania, Peru, Lebanon, the USA and Ukraine. Just listing the names of their countries of origin and imagining their respective landscapes evokes a sound. This is the sound world we are trying to bring together in this project. The young people bring their cultural imprint to the outside world with the instrument they have built for this purpose. The sound of the mountain ranges of Afghanistan resounds together with the ones of the streets and squares of Berlin.

Since 2014, the community garden Allmende-Kontor exists with meanwhile more than 250 raised beds. With our young people we have now also built a raised bed on the sunny Tempelhofer Feld and can start growing vegetables.
Fortunately, we have repaired plenty of bicycles. This makes it much more fun to cover the three kilometers to the other end of Tempelhof Airport.
